Engagement rate is the single number every brand checks before paying for a collaboration. It tells them whether your audience is real and whether your content actually resonates. Yet most creators either don't know their number or use the wrong formula to calculate it.

This guide gives you the formula, the India-specific benchmarks for 2026, and explains why your engagement rate matters more than your follower count when pitching to brands.

The Formula: How to Calculate Instagram Engagement Rate

There are several versions of this formula. Here are the two most commonly used by brands in India:

Formula 1 — Post Engagement Rate (most common)

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers × 100

Calculate this for each of your last 10–15 posts, then take the average. This is your engagement rate.

Example: You have 22,000 followers. Your last 10 posts averaged 680 likes and 45 comments each. That's 725 engagements per post.

725 ÷ 22,000 × 100 = 3.29% engagement rate

Formula 2 — Reach-Based Engagement Rate (more accurate)

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Reach × 100

This uses actual reach (unique accounts who saw the post) instead of total followers. It's a more honest number because not all followers see every post. Use this formula when sharing your stats with brands who want to see how your content performs against actual views.

Should You Include Saves?

Instagram Saves are an increasingly important signal — they indicate content people want to return to. Some creators and brands now use:

Extended Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments + Saves) ÷ Followers × 100

Saves are particularly valuable for educational, recipe, travel, and finance content. If your saves-per-post are high, include them in your media kit.

Instagram Engagement Rate Benchmarks — India 2026

Here's how your number stacks up against Indian creators at each tier:

Nano Influencers (1K – 10K followers)

  • Excellent: Above 8%
  • Good: 5% – 8%
  • Average: 3% – 5%
  • Below average: Under 3%

Micro Influencers (10K – 100K followers)

  • Excellent: Above 5%
  • Good: 3% – 5%
  • Average: 1.5% – 3%
  • Below average: Under 1.5%

Mid-tier Influencers (100K – 500K followers)

  • Excellent: Above 3%
  • Good: 1.5% – 3%
  • Average: 0.8% – 1.5%
  • Below average: Under 0.8%

Macro Influencers (500K – 1M followers)

  • Excellent: Above 2%
  • Good: 1% – 2%
  • Average: 0.5% – 1%
  • Below average: Under 0.5%

Engagement naturally decreases as follower count increases — this is normal and expected. A micro influencer at 2.5% is performing well for their tier. A macro influencer at 2.5% is exceptional.

Why Your Engagement Rate Is Dropping — And What to Do

If your engagement rate has declined over the past 3–6 months, these are the most common reasons:

1. You're Posting Too Frequently

Instagram's algorithm distributes your content across your audience. If you post every day, it divides the same pool of engaged followers across more posts. Posting 4–5 times per week often produces higher per-post engagement than posting daily.

2. Your Content Has Drifted Off-Niche

Followers who followed you for fitness content disengage when you start posting travel. Algorithm signals drop when engagement drops, creating a cycle. Audit your last 30 posts and check whether the niche is tight.

3. You're Buying Followers or Using Follow/Unfollow

Fake or non-targeted followers permanently dilute your engagement rate. There is no fix other than consistently producing strong content and letting the audience naturally rebalance over time.

4. Reels vs Feed Posts

Reels typically get higher reach but lower engagement rates than feed posts, because they're pushed to non-followers who haven't opted in to your content. If you've shifted heavily to Reels, your aggregate engagement rate will appear lower even if your content is performing well.

What a "Good" Engagement Rate Gets You with Brands

Here's the practical impact of your engagement rate on brand deals:

  • Under 1% — Brands will pass unless your follower count is very large. Hard to justify the cost.
  • 1% – 3% — Industry average. Brands will work with you if the niche and demographics match.
  • 3% – 5% — Strong. Brands actively seek creators at this level. You can charge a premium.
  • Above 5% — Excellent. At this level, follower count becomes secondary — brands will prioritise you regardless of size.

How to See Your Real Engagement Rate — Not an Estimate

Manually calculating engagement rate from 15 posts is tedious and only gives you an estimate. TheCreatorsHIVE pulls your engagement rate directly from the Instagram API — the same verified data Instagram reports to you in your Professional Dashboard. It's recalculated automatically as new posts go live, and it's displayed on your public profile so brands can see it without asking.

Your engagement rate is also shown on your auto-generated media kit alongside reach, impressions, and audience demographics — all verified, all updated in real time.
